Pianista e tecladista de jazz norte-americano e um compositor bastante conhecido por seu trabalho na década de 1970 no gênero chamado jazz fusion, apesar de ter contribuições significativas para o jazz tradicional. Participou da criação do movimento electric fusion como membro da banda de Miles Davis na década de 1960, e, nos anos 1970, fez parte do grupo Return to Forever. Continuou a buscar outros colaboradores e a explorar vários estilos e gêneros musicais nos anos 1980 e 1990. Entre os pianistas de jazz, Corea é considerado um dos mais influentes, desde Bill Evans (junto com Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner e Keith Jarrett). McLaughlin, após tocar no histórico grupo de Miles Davis, nos álbuns In a Silent Way e Bitches Brew, e participar também do Lifetime de Tony Williams, lançou-se em 1971 ao projeto de formar seu próprio grupo. O nome Mahavishnu Orchestra denuncia o interesse de John pela filosofia oriental, do mesmo modo que os títulos dos discos lançados pelo grupo.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Inicialmente o grupo contava com a presença de McLaughlin à guitarra, Billy Cobham na bateria, Jerry Goodman ao violino, Jan Hammer nos teclados e Rick Laird ao contrabaixo. Essa formação gravou três discos (The Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire e Between Nothingness and Eternity) e fez furor junto a um público mais amplo do que o do jazz, graças ao estilo próximo do rock progressivo, ao virtuosismo de seus integrantes e ao alto grau de sofisticação do material sonoro apresentado.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A segunda formação da Mahavishnu, de maiores proporções, contava com Jean-Luc Ponty ao violino, mais a tecladista e vocalista Gayle Moran, o baixista Ralphe Armstrong (que depois tocaria no grupo de Ponty) e o baterista Narada Michael Walden, entre outros. McLaughlin, sempre desejoso de pintar quadros sonoros grandiloqüentes, usuou fartamente recursos de orquestra sinfônica (dirigida por Michael Tillson Thomas, um regente amigo da fusion).
